M. Freddy has always had an eye for the unusual characters shaping the world around us. In his latest series The Horticulture Gala, the guest list takes an unexpected turn: sharply dressed flora and fauna with a touch of the surreal. Inspired by his adventures in nature with his Airedale terrier, Freddy brings a new cast of characters to the fore. His former life photographing supermodels at New York Fashion Week, including the Hadids, informs the pastel drawing series' sense of movement and gravitas.

Freddy’s made-to-order limited edition prints are produced for a discerning collector base. They are giclée printed with archival Epson UltraChrome HDX Wide Gamut pigment-based inks on Ilford 310gsm 100% cotton textured paper, which meets the ISO 9706 archival standard. Each limited edition print includes a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). This 1st Edition comprises 30 prints in total, across two formats: 27x A4 prints and 3x A3 prints. The edition is finite and will not be reproduced once complete.

For collectors who wish to frame their prints, Nielsen Quadrum frames are available as a standard add-on. They are made of solid wood from FSC®-certified sources with an Oak veneer and fitted with a ~45% UV filter glass glazing. A window mount cut from acid-free card separates the print from the glass, allowing the work to be presented and preserved to a high standard.

Complimentary DHL courier delivery is included with import duties covered at no extra cost to you, for orders to the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. We work closely with our fine art print specialists. Please allow approximately 5–7 business days for unframed prints and 10–12 business days for framed works, from the time you place an order to its arrival at your door. These timeframes are indicative and subject to delivery conditions. Tracking details will be provided by DHL when available.

Artist biography

M. Freddy is a contemporary artist who explores the quiet brilliance of subcultures and their roles in social change. His work has recently been featured by Lomography and exhibited as part of a group show at the University of Oxford titled "Responding to AI". Cherwell Newspaper described him as "[a] star" and Christ Church, University of Oxford praised his work "personal and reflective" in an increasingly digital world.

A New York Upper East Sider in Oxford, Freddy holds a BFA from the Parsons School of Design and an MA from Johns Hopkins. He was also a Departmental Visiting Student at the University of Oxford, and currently mentors at Yale’s Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking. He is a former student of James Romberger, an artist in the East Village canon alongside Basquiat, Wojnarowicz, and McGinley.

Savoir faire

Freddy’s original artworks are made primarily with archival, non-toxic chalk pastels from Chalk Copenhagen, using chalk sourced from Denmark’s Stevns Cliffs. The earthy palette of the pastels is set against bold, graphic colours of Kitpas’ non-toxic rice bran wax crayons made in Japan, like the signature dark background in The Horticulture Gala. The drawings are completed on 100% cotton, 300gsm, hot-pressed, Arches Aquarelle paper, which meets the ISO 9706 archival standard.

His use of chalk pastels reflects the influence of Romberger’s work and captures the spirit of action painting. The medium demands a certain decisiveness: there is little room for error, no opportunity to erase, and too much reworking can quickly muddy the surface. Even though Freddy does not “attack the canvas” as some abstract expressionists do, there is a sense of Pollock’s “controlled accident” at play: he starts with a sketch and let the chalk determine the precise outcome. These bold, energetic marks hold the artwork together.
