Excerpts from “Why Polaroids? From the Co-Curator of the Instant Film as Contemporary Art Monthly Series“ on Visible Mag
I started taking polaroids because of my dog. In 10 years when I look back at his polaroids I would probably get quite emotional. At a time when we see so many digital and AI generated images everyday, polaroids feel real. They can be framed and staged, but the moment they capture nevertheless existed. I love to sit together and talk while a polaroid develops, then review the image together with the people I photograph. There is something quite magical about seeing the image emerge — I have even had people take videos of the development process.
The Polaroid photoshoots are part of my broader contemporary art practice. I have been a Fellow and an Expert at the United Nations. I hold a B.F.A. from the Parsons School of Design in New York and an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University. I was a Departmental Visiting Student at the University of Oxford, and a former student of James Romberger, an artist in the East Village canon alongside Basquiat, Wojnarowicz, and McGinley.

Schedule a Polaroid Photoshoot in London
A typical photoshoot includes one pack of Fujifilm Instax Square colour film with 10 shots. Of the 10, you will receive 3 as selected by M. Freddy together with a signed Certificate of Authenticity. This includes both the colour corrected digital scans and the 3 original objects, to be delivered via FedEx. The selection is carefully curated by the artist, shaped by your conversations during the photoshoot. We may offer more polaroids for an additional fee, but this will be on a case-by-case basis. Polaroids outside of the curation are often work products similar to sketches and we do not offer these to collectors.
Fashion, music, editorial, engagement photoshoots welcome. The most inspired photoshoots tend to unfold within an hour, when everyone’s energies are high. We are happy to coordinate with your hair and makeup artists, as well as offer any styling advice if desired. Photoshoots typically take place in West and Central London.
Depending on the complexity of the photoshoot and the required licenses, the experience begins at 850 GBP, with 400 GBP for each additional polaroid (colour corrected digital scan and object) after the selection of 3, if available. Signed A3 one-of-one artist proofs on C-type Fujiflex Crystal Archive Paper (“Supergloss”) begins at 2,500 GBP. Each A3 artist proof includes a Certificate of Authenticity by M. Freddy and a Provenance Certificate by Metro Imaging signed by their print technician or production manager. Metro Imaging holds a Royal Warrant as a photographic printer and supplier. Please note, commercial and other reproductions (e.g. on merchandise, in print) of the artworks are not permitted without the express written permission from the artist.
We sometimes offer discounted photoshoot rates for emerging creatives. Please reach out to inquire.
Free Consultation
To discuss creative direction, commission fees, and timing, please email Concierge@MFreddy.com to arrange a virtual consultation with the artist. We generally recommend reaching out 3-4 weeks in advance.

Photography has been one of the drivers of aesthetics and visual culture. The Instant Film as Contemporary Art Monthly Series explores some big questions: What makes a photograph contemporary art? How do photographs gain cultural significance? Along the way, we will address enduring themes such as identify, memories, change, knowledge, and the social imaginaries captured by today’s photographs. Co-organized by M. Freddy.
