Sustainability

Having been a Fellow and Expert at the United Nations, and a member of the Gallery Climate Coalition, M. Freddy is committed to more sustainable art practices.

Sustainable art practice is a nuanced topic. We focus on five major areas at the Studio including (1) material properties, (2) delivery, (3) packaging, (4) concept, and (5) aftercare. It is our hope that a stronger demand for sustainability from artists and collectors will lead to more sustainable options.

1. Material Choice

There is a range of material properties such as whether an item is handmade, non-toxic, archival, made locally, recyclable, plastic-free, and affordable. We evaluate each material choice carefully, and our guiding principle is to prioritize non-toxic options for health purposes. This includes for example SpectraFix’s FinalFix non-toxic fixative and Chalk Copenhagen’s light-fast, non-toxic, locally sourced chalk pastels, which determine the texture and colour palette of Freddy’s drawings.

2. Delivery

Across a range of factors including customer service, reliability, affordability, reputation, speed, and sustainability, we typically deliver via FedEx and via fine art courier by collector’s request. We rejected one courier when different staff within the same company offered contradicting statistics on sustainable fuels options.

3. Packaging

We use recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, and 100% home compostable Plantwave air pillows made with potato starch where applicable. However, fine art couriers will determine the artwork’s packaging such as wooden crates and other protective layers in order for the artworks to qualify for ad valorem insurance.

4. Concepts

Nature and Natural Objects as Actors in Everyday Lives“ (2022), an art workshop Freddy co-organized, offered some interesting ideas on how contemporary artists can advocate for sustainability. Artists can build on cultural practices and offer narratives that give personal meaning to nature related activities or objects. Freddy experiments with this in his art series “Urban Wildlife” (2025) and “The Instant Film Project” (2025). Each artwork is accompanied by custom prose. His new series, “Correspondence Club by M. Freddy” (2025), features a handwritten letter and fresh flowers from his walks, as a way of connecting nature to collector’s personal events.

5. Aftercare

We always offer aftercare advice with sustainability in mind. This may include archival frames with locally sourced timber or other non-toxic archival framing materials.
